July 6th, 2008 — dodoThe Obstacles—riders now weave their way through a series of turns that lead them over several obstacles (jumps), ranging from fairly easy to difficult and technically challenging. The jumps are designed to challenge a rider’s ability to the fullest, create close racing, and maximize airtime. Jumps come in many sizes and are linked to create varying degrees of difficulty throughout he course. The jumps are categorized as:
- SINGLE JUMP – rider jumps 20-60 feet (6-18m) onto a flat landing
- DOUBLE JUMP – rider jumps off one obstacle and lands on the far side of the next, usually covering 20-70 feet of terrain
- TRIPLE JUMP – rider must get through three consecutive jumps and may choose to jump them as sets of two and one, or as a group of three (launching over an entire triple requires the rider to catch up to 25 feet (7.6m) of vertical air over a distance of 75 feet (23m) or more. Triples are real crowd pleasers)
- WHOOPS – a series of short and steep bumps across the entire width of the course that throw the rider about while crossing them.
- The obstacles in Supercross give the riders enough time in the air to read War And Peace. Instead, they use the hang time to perform stylish trick maneuvers, many of which where created in BMX. Here are some of the most visually exciting:
- WHIP IT – moving the motorcycle from one side to the other in the air
- PANCAKE – pitching motorcycle and rider over to the side, as close to 90 degrees from vertical as possible
- CANCAN – taking one leg and bringing it across the motorcycle seat to the other side and back before landing
- NAC NAC – taking one leg off the back of the motorcycle and swinging backward to look at what’s behind you while in the air. A move made famous by Jeremy McGrath
- HELL CLICKER — an insane move created by Kevin Windham where the rider lifts their feet and clicks their heels together in front of the motorcycle before landing
- BAR HOP — another insane move that’s often practiced but unsuitable in a race where the rider takes their feet and places them on the handlebars before landing
- SUPERMAN AIR — another McGrath move where the rider holds on to the handlebars and lets the rest of their body to fly up away from the motorcycle while airborne.
The moves and obstacles in the Supercross Series are not natural, but many natural obstacles exist in areas that every rider can get to and play on. The machinery and technology of modern bikes has produced unprecedented opportunities to push the limits. Because the expanse of natural terrain is so broad, and so easily reached on a motoX bike, the only limitation of what can by ridden and how is defined by who’s riding it.
One unfortunate aspect of motoX is that riders of all levels of ability and physical strength can get a motoX bike to go fast. As a result, every year riders are injured while performing stunts and tricks they are not prepared to handle, or over terrain they are unfamiliar with. The most important thing to remember for each motorcycle and motoX rider is that it’s very easy to go fast and catch a lot of air, but it is not very easy to control and land the motorcycle. Take your time and learn at a reasonable pace, extreme riding requires years of practice, and excellent physical conditioning.
