Paddling your own Canoe
July 30th, 2008 — dodoClearly, one place where it is not wise to venture alone is onto a river or lake, but if you can swim and are used to the water, canoeing makes a delightful basis for a camping holiday. You can either set off to explore the waterways near home (and it is surprising how many discoveries you make when you see a familiar landscape from this new angle); or the canoes can be transported to your starting point on a roof rack or trailer.
In northern Germany, for example, there is an area known as the “Holstein Switzerland” around the town of Plön and it is easy to spend a fortnight here paddling around the inter-connecting lakes and staying at several established campsites. The authors also spent part of one holiday canoing on the sea, in the sheltered waters among the skerries on the eastern coast of Sweden. There is nothing to compare with the sense of freedom accorded by this form of lightweight camping because with a small tent and an adequate supply of food you can actually spend the nights alone on your own wooded island, surrounded by the tideless ripples of the Baltic. The only wild animals against which any defense is needed are the restlessly scavenging ants !
In our own case, we were lucky enough to be able to borrow a couple of excellent German folding canoes which would fit into a large car boot. But in some places canoes or small boats can be hired on the spot, complete with lifejackets and one or two other items of equipment.
