International Boating Sound Signals

Sound is used to signal intent or action between vessels. While the Inland Rules and the International Rules are generally similar, sound signals under Inland Rules for head-on, crossing and overtaking situations are signals of intent, whereas under International Rules they signal an action taking place. The most common Inland signals are illustrated below.

Equipment Outfitters

Terms

  • Short Blast: A blast of one second duration.
  • Prolonged Blast: A blast of four to six seconds.
  • Restricted Visibility: Rules that apply to vessels not in sight of each each other when navigating in or near an area of restricted visibility (Inland and International Rules are identical).
  • Signals to Attract Attention: Any sound signal or combination that cannot be mistaken for any signal authorized anywhere else in the rules.

Inlet Boat Running

An inlet can be difficult to enter when tide and harbor shallows cause waves to start breaking in the entrance. The waves can sometimes be dangerous and, unless there is an urgent reason to get to shore, it is safer to wait outside for smoother water to develop when the tide changes. It also stands to reason that when leaving the harbor, it is best to wait until the waves in the inlet have subsided.

  • Assessing the Inlet: If you aren’t familiar with the inlet, watch other boats pass through the waves. Study the wave pattern. There is often a series of three or five waves followed by a small wave, which is what you want for your entrance.
  • Preparing the Boat: If you are concerned about conditions, have your crew put on life jackets, close hatches and center crew weight slightly aft to keep the bow up.
  • Entering the Inlet: Since it is important to keep your boat lined up with the waves, you should be prepared to steer quickly. Watch the waves both ahead and behind you. The safest place to be is on the back side of an incoming wave. Adjust your speed to stay ahead of the wave behind you but don’t go so fast that you catch up with the crest ahead. Some fast powerboats, such as the one shown below, will be able to ride the top of the crest safely.
