Motorbike / Motorcycle Ride Gear Motorcycle Helmets and Visors

Not only a safety requirement, but also a legal one in this country. An approved motorcycle helmet must be worn by riders and pillion passengers when the motorcycle is used on the road.

There are two basic motorcycle helmet styles, open face and full face: both are available in either glass fibre or polycarbonate.

Glass fibre motorcycle helmets are slightly heavier and more expensive than those made of polycarbonate, and they have fewer drawbacks. They can be cleaned easily, painted or take stickers. Polycarbonate motorcycle helmets cannot be painted or have stickers attached, and care has to be taken with cleaning. Solvents, paints and glues can weaken the plastic shell and make motorcycle helmets completely useless.

Equipment OutfittersOf the two motorcycle helmets styles the full face helmet is probably the most widely used. It offers greater protection in that the chin guard stops facial injuries. It is also warmer in cold weather.

Open face motorcycle helmets are usually worn more by small motorbike and moped motorcycle riders. They are also preferred by trail riders because they allow the rider to get more fresh air when the going gets strenuous.

Eye protection is essential, no matter which motorcycle helmet is chosen. A motorcycle visor is a standard fitting on full face motorcycle helmets, but open face types usually only have a peak. Closing the motorcycle visor on a full face motorcycle helmet completes the all round protection that this style offers.

Visors for open face motorcycle helmets clip on to the front of the motorcycle helmet with press studs. Some can be raised, like on a full face version, but many are fixed and prone to misting.

Motorcycle goggles are rare these days, but are still used with both open and full face helmets. Their popularity is with the trail riders, and this is reflected in the type of goggles now available. The older motorcycle glass type are giving way to the plastic ski style, which can take clip-on tinted lenses and have adjustable air vents for demisting.
