During warm weather conditions normal underclothes are more than adequate, but in cold climates, and when motorcycle travelling long distances, some extra protection is required.

Some of the older methods are still used in emergencies, but modern thermal underwear is now taking over.

Using a pair of ladies nylon tights may not sound very manly but it is an excellent way of keeping your legs warm. A folded newspaper inside the motorcycle jacket across the chest and stomach is also a very good, and cheap, way of keeping out the cold.

Being prepared for the cold is half the problem. It’s no good starting out on a long motorcycle journey to suddenly find you do not have enough warm motorcycle clothing. Companies like Damart sell various one- and two-piece sets of thermal underwear — a material that is designed to retain heat. It can, however, be expensive, and a cheaper alternative for shorter motorcycle journeys is a long-sleeved vest and longjohns, normally available from Army surplus stores.

Motorbike / Motorcycle Ride Gear Extras

Motorbike ride gear helmet pelmet — a shaped piece of vinyl material that is fixed to the front of a full face motorbike ride gearhelmet chin bar. A strip of Velcro tape is stuck to the motorbike helmet and the motorbike pelmet can be removed and replaced as necessary. It hangs down in front of the neck and keeps cold draughts from entering the motorbike helmet.

Under-helmet — a thin balaclava made from silk or cotton and worn under the helmet. It has a slit for the eyes, and the remainder covers the face, ears and neck to keep your head warm in cold weather.
